Are you looking into new careers that will allow you to feel more fulfilled? Becoming a dental assistant would give you the opportunity to master countless skills, work with your hands, and help people regain their smile and feel better about their appearance. The only problem is that you also need to be able to support yourself, which is why the salary of a dental assistant plays a large factor in deciding whether or not you want to start school. Read on to learn what a day in the life of a dental assistant will look like and how much they make.

The Salary of a Dental Assistant

When you go in for a job interview, likely the very last thing that they’ll tell you is what your salary will be. Unfortunately, for many people, this is a deciding factor in whether or not it’s worth it to switch careers. Before you invest money in paying for a program and start moving around your daily schedule to accommodate studying, it’s important for you to know whether you’re going to be able to afford to live on a dental assistant’s pay.

As of February 11, 2020 the average pay per hour for a dental assistant in the United States is $17. However, depending on a variety of factors, including location and demand, your pay as a dental assistant can be anywhere from $10 an hour up to $23.32 an hour.

Advancing Your Education & Salary

If over time, you’d like to open the door to additional opportunities in the dental field and increase your pay, you can also consider expanding your education by learning additional skills. After dental assistant school, you can seek additional opportunities and training by taking expanded function courses, a dental assistant instructor program, dental office administrator courses, or dental sales representative training. Each of these job titles typically comes with higher pay and different responsibilities. Here are some average salaries for different opportunities:

  • Dental Assistant Instructor: averagepay range between $16 to $27 an hour.
  • Dental Office Administrator: average pay range between $14 and $30 an hour.
  • Dental Sales Rep: average pay range between $11 and $77 an hour.

The Daily Life of a Dental Assistant

It makes sense that you’d want to get a “lay of the land” before you commit to dental assisting school. There’s nothing worse than committing your time, energy, and money into a career that you may not enjoy. Many people choose dental assisting because it is fulfilling, and they’re able to learn a variety of skills from professionals. Here are some daily tasks you can expect to participate in:

  • Act as a second pair of hands to a dentist while they perform a variety of treatments and procedures.
  • Asking about a patient’s medical history and taking their blood pressure and pulse.
  • Sterilize treatment room equipment.
  • Helping patients feel comfortable during their appointment.
  • Providing patients with instructions before and after dental treatments.
  • Teaching patients how to properly care for their teeth and gums.

A dental assistant’s salary depends on several factors, but with the proper knowledge, skills, and training, you’ll be ready to jump into the dental world. Just remember, becoming a dental assistant is only the tip of the iceberg of opportunities that completing dental assisting school will make available to you.
